For an up-close, detailed evaluation of the uterine cavity, hysteroscopy provides our fertility specialists with valuable diagnostic insights. At First Fertility, we utilize the latest hysteroscopy techniques and technologies to assess and treat a wide range of uterine conditions that can impact fertility.

Hysteroscopy allows our physicians to literally look inside the uterus, detecting abnormalities that may not be visible through other testing methods. When combined with advanced treatment capabilities, hysteroscopic surgery can also correct many of these issues, improving your chances of successful conception and pregnancy.

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is used to diagnose or treat problems of the uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin, lighted telescope-like device. It is the inspection of the uterine cavity by endoscopy with access through the cervix. It allows for the diagnosis of intrauterine pathology and serves as a method for surgical intervention.

Why is Hysteroscopy Used?

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is an invaluable tool for thoroughly evaluating the uterine cavity to identify:

  • Uterine synechiae (scar tissue)
  • Retained products of conception
  • Uterine anomalies or malformations
  • Causes of repeat miscarriage or infertility

Diagnostic hysteroscopy can detect issues that may prevent embryo implantation or increase miscarriage risk, allowing for timely treatment before pursuing fertility treatments.

Operative Hysteroscopy

When abnormalities are discovered, operative hysteroscopy allows for convenient, same-visit treatment in an outpatient setting, often under just IV sedation to relax the patient.

Conditions treated using operative hysteroscopy include:

  • Removal of uterine polyps or fibroids (tissue that lines the uterus)
  • Removal of scar tissue or adhesions (scar tissue that forms in the uterus or cervix)
  • Opening of blocked fallopian tubes
  • Treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding

By resolving these types of uterine issues, many patients see significant improvements in their ability to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy after hysteroscopic treatment.

What is the Hysteroscopy Procedure?

Preparation

Depending on the type of hysteroscopy, some preparation may be needed such as taking medication beforehand, cervical preparation to make it easier for the hysteroscope to pass through, or administering anesthesia (conscious sedation or general anesthesia).

The Hysteroscopy

Once prepared, the hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Sterile solution or carbon dioxide gas is used to expand the uterine cavity for optimal visualization.

Examination & Treatment

With the high-resolution camera on the hysteroscope, your doctor will carefully inspect the uterine cavity and fallopian tube openings for any abnormalities. If treatment is needed, tiny instruments will be passed through the hysteroscope to remove or correct any issues discovered.

After the Procedure

Following a diagnostic hysteroscopy, you’ll rest for a period of observation before being released home the same day. For operative hysteroscopies, your recovery time will depend on the extent of treatment performed.

What are the Benefits of a Hysteroscopy?

  • Allows direct visualization of the uterine cavity
  • More accurate than alternative imaging techniques
  • Can diagnose and treat many conditions in a single visit
  • Minimally invasive with tiny incisions
  • Outpatient procedure with mild sedation or anesthesia
  • Improved fertility rates after treatment of uterine issues

Is Hysteroscopy Right for Me?

Hysteroscopy can benefit patients facing a variety of reproductive health concerns, including:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Recurrent miscarriages
  • Fetal or placental tissue that remains in the uterus after pregnancy
  • Abnormal or excessive uterine bleeding

Our fertility specialist will go over your individual situation to determine if hysteroscopy is recommended either for diagnostic evaluation or operative treatment of any abnormalities present.

If uterine factors are suspected as a potential cause of infertility difficulties or recurrent pregnancy loss, hysteroscopy offers a minimally invasive way to identify and often resolve these problems, improving your chances of successful conception.
