In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an advanced reproductive technology that offers hope to couples facing infertility. It consists of a set of procedures planned to improve the likelihood of conception. IVF treatment is an option to consider when other procedures have been unsuccessful.

What is The IVF Process? Our 6 Steps.

Typically extending over several months, the IVF process typically consists of several steps. An egg is fertilized outside the body before an embryo created using this technique is transferred to the uterus where it continues to develop. This process is suitable for various forms of infertility – endometriosis, immunological infertility, male factor infertility and oocyte maturation failure, among others.

Step 1: Diagnosis and Consultation

In order to establish the most accurate diagnosis, a professional will speak with you and your partner, asking you both questions relating to your overall health and any conditions. Then, we will run some tests to better understand what the causes of your infertility indicate. After we have gathered enough information, we will make a diagnosis, and through this procedure we can give a suitable therapeutic plan for you.

We are conscious that you will likely have a number of questions, and we are always here to address any concerns you may have. Our fertility specialists will consult with you, go through all the available options, and answer any of your questions.

Step 2: Ovulation Medication

To start off the IVF treatment process, women are administered medication to stimulate their ovaries into producing a higher number of eggs than they would naturally. This step is crucial because not every egg will successfully mature, and by increasing the quantity, it improves the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

Step 3: Egg Retrieval

At the next step, our healthcare professionals will need to retrieve some of your eggs in order for fertilization to happen. This part of the procedure involves inserting a probe into the vagina with a tiny needle that can extract eggs from the ovaries. Some patients may opt to freeze their eggs in case they decide they want to have a baby in the future.

Step 4: Sperm Retrieval

This part of the process is usually carried out through masturbation. However, some male patients may require sperm removal from their testes using a needle, and in a few instances, a biopsy is required. The latter treatments can be unsettling, although painkillers and anesthetic are administered as needed.

Step 5: Fertilization

One of the most common methods of fertilization involves simply taking the eggs and sperm, mixing them together, leaving them overnight and allowing nature to run its course. Another popular option is what’s called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a healthy sperm is injected directly into an egg.

Step 6: Embryo Implantation

Between two and five days following the fertilization, the eggs will be placed into the womb. It’s a relatively straightforward procedure, using a catheter, which has a syringe at the end, and this is used to insert the egg (or eggs) into the uterus. The result is that the fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus’ lining, and then will develop into a healthy baby.

Advantages of IVF

High Success Rates: IVF has significant high success rates and provides hope for those who have not had successful other fertility treatments.

Increased Control: IVF allows for selection of the healthiest embryos for transfer, which can improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Genetic Screening: Genetic testing for genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities, reducing the risk of passing on hereditary conditions to the offspring.

Flexibility: Options such as donor eggs or sperm carriers and embryo freezing, which provide flexibility to individuals and couples to build their families.

Overcome Fertility Issues: IVF can help with a range of infertility causes, including blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility.

Single Embryo Transfer: Thanks to modern advances, single embryo transfer has become more common in IVF, reducing the risk of multiple pregnancy complications.
