The Egg Freezing Process
Egg freezing is a two-step process that involves the stimulation of the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, followed by the extraction and freezing of these eggs.
STEP ONE
Collecting the eggs from the donor is the first step in the egg freezing process. The method for retrieving the eggs involves using similar hormones as with in vitro fertilization to stimulate the ovaries in order to create multiple eggs. It may take over 10 days to go through this process. When the eggs have developed sufficiently to be taken out, the female patient is given medicine to be sedated and a needle is used to remove the eggs through an uncomplicated method called transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration.
STEP TWO
When ready for the second stage, the donor’s eggs go through a fast freezing process using a technique called vitrification. This freezes the eggs very quickly to prevent ice crystals forming which may cause damage to the cells. The frozen eggs are then kept in liquid nitrogen tanks until they are needed. After fertilizing, tests are carried out to determine which egg has the best chance of developing. Once the egg matures into an embryo, it gets placed in the uterus. There the embryo will develop further, and a typical childbirth will take place.
