Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) is a viable option for certain men who are having problems conceiving. Through this process, they are able to conceive via intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) / vitro fertilization (IVF). To provide our patients with the best opportunity of becoming parents, our team at First Fertility provides TESA and other cutting-edge sperm retrieval treatments.
How Does TESA Work?
Testicular sperm extraction (TESA) is a minimally invasive procedure where a fine needle is carefully inserted into the testicle to retrieve viable sperm. It usually takes place in an outpatient environment while under local anesthetic.
The testicle’s sperm-producing areas are located by the doctor using ultrasound or other imaging techniques during the TESA treatment. Next, the testicular tissue is directly punctured through the scrotal skin using a hollow needle. The seminal fluid containing the sperm cells is removed using a mild suction.
Our embryologists are given the recovered testicular tissue sample and use a high magnification to look at it in order to find any sperm. If sperm cells have been identified, they are processed and stored in a freezer in case ICSI is needed later on in an IVF cycle.
The TESA Process
Consultation & Testing
The process starts with a meeting where our fertility specialists will review your medical records, look at your semen test results, and decide if TESA is the best option to get sperm for ICSI/IVF. They may also order more hormone tests.
Scheduling Your TESA
Your TESA procedure will be carefully scheduled to coincide with your partner’s egg retrieval during an IVF cycle. This allows the fresh sperm sample to be used immediately after retrieval.
TESA Procedure
On the day of your TESA, you will receive local anesthesia to numb the area. The procedure takes about 30-60 minutes as the surgeon locates and collects viable sperm samples from the testicular tissue.
Sperm Processing & ICSI
The retrieved sperm sample is handed over to our embryologists, who will identify and prepare the highest quality sperm for use with the ICSI process fertilizing your partner’s eggs.
